Taking the family home? Check the eTA first.

Kenya now asks travellers to apply and pay online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation before they fly. Some people are exempt. Check before you book, especially for family members travelling on Canadian passports.

Last checked October 20, 2026. Rules change, so confirm on the linked page before you go or pay anything.

1. What the eTA is

The Kenya High Commission says all travellers to Kenya must apply and pay for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before they travel, except those the official eTA site lists as exempt.

2. Who needs one

The official site keeps the list of who is exempt. If anyone in your family travels on a Canadian or other non-Kenyan passport, including children born here, check whether they need an eTA well before the trip.

3. How to apply

  • Apply on the official site, etakenya.go.ke, which the High Commission links to.
  • The eTA team can be reached on WhatsApp at +254 110 922 064 or by phone at +254 717 436 070.
