Help us celebrate Jamhuri Day.

On Saturday, December 12, 2026, the Kenyan community of Thunder Bay will celebrate Kenya's independence together: a family day with Kenyan food, music, the anthem and activities for the children. Sponsors make it affordable for everyone.

Talk to us about sponsoring

The celebration

  • When: Saturday, December 12, 2026. Venue and time will be posted on the Jamhuri Day page once booked.
  • Who: Kenyan families in Thunder Bay, newcomers and friends of the community. We're planning for 50 to 80 guests.
  • What: a family event with no alcohol, Kenyan food prepared in an inspected kitchen, music and a children's programme.
  • Price: we plan to keep adult tickets low and let children in free. That only works with sponsors.

What your support pays for

Sponsorship goes to the hall first, so that ticket money can go to food. After that, it covers sound, decorations and printing.

Help in kind is just as welcome: food or drinks, sound equipment, printing, decorations or prizes for the children.

What sponsors get

  • Your name, or your logo, on the Jamhuri Day page on wakenyatbay.ca.
  • A thank-you on the day, in front of the community.
  • A thank-you in our post about the celebration and in our monthly newsletter.
  • If you're a Kenyan-owned, African-owned or community-friendly business, a free listing in our business directory (listing is free for everyone).

How we handle money

  • Wakenyatbay is a volunteer-run community group, not a registered charity, so we can't issue tax receipts.
  • Where we can, we'll ask you to pay a cost directly, for example the hall's invoice, so you know exactly where your money went.
  • After the event we publish a plain summary of money in and money out, with every sponsor thanked by name (unless you'd rather not be named).
