Calling Kenya from Thunder Bay Reach home without waking anyone at 2 a.m.

Kenya does not change its clocks, and Thunder Bay does: a polite July evening call home is the middle of the night in January. Here is the time gap, how to dial +254, how to reach a phone with no WhatsApp, and how to keep the Kenyan number your bank and M-Pesa use.

Last checked October 27, 2026. Rules change, so confirm on the linked page before you go or pay anything. Soma kwa Kiswahili.

1. What time it is in Kenya

Kenya uses East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3, all year. It does not observe daylight saving time. Thunder Bay uses Eastern Time, the same clock as Toronto. National Research Council Canada says clocks that follow daylight saving move forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November.

Summer, EDT (UTC−4)

From the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November, Kenya is 7 hours ahead of Thunder Bay. 7:00 a.m. here is 2:00 p.m. there.

Winter, EST (UTC−5)

From the first Sunday in November, Kenya is 8 hours ahead. The same 7:00 a.m. call lands at 3:00 p.m. in Kenya. In 2026 the change is Sunday, November 1.

Thunder Bay time, and the matching time in Kenya. A good window is 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. here: afternoon and evening there.
Thunder Bay Kenya in summer (7 hours ahead) Kenya in winter (8 hours ahead)

Call between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Thunder Bay time. That is 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Kenya in summer, and 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in winter. Parents and grandparents are awake. After 4:00 p.m. here you are calling late at night, and a 6:00 p.m. call is 1:00 a.m. or 2:00 a.m. at home.

Thunder Bay itself is east of 90° west, so it stays on Eastern Time. NRC says the parts of Ontario west of 90° west, which includes Kenora, are on Central Time, one hour behind Thunder Bay. If that is you, Kenya is an hour further ahead than this table: 8 hours in summer and 9 in winter.

2. How to dial +254

Kenya's country code is 254. On a Canadian mobile, dial +254 and drop the leading 0 from the Kenyan number. On a landline, Canadian networks use the exit code 011 instead of the plus sign: 011 254, then the number without the 0.

Mobile (07… and 01…)

The Communications Authority of Kenya's numbering plan (October 2024) puts mobile numbers under 07 and 01. Drop the 0. 07XX XXX XXX becomes +254 7XX XXX XXX. 01XX XXX XXX becomes +254 1XX XXX XXX.

Landline (02…, 04…, 05…, 06…)

Fixed lines use a geographic code. Nairobi is 020, Mombasa 041, Nakuru 051, Eldoret 053, Kisumu 057. Drop the leading 0 only. A Nairobi number written 020 XXX XXXX is +254 20 XXX XXXX. From a landline in Canada that is 011 254 20 XXX XXXX.

Sources: Communications Authority of Kenya, numbering plan, October 2024 (country code 254 is the ITU code that plan is written under; 01 and 07 are mobile; 020, 041, 051, 053 and 057 are the area codes named above); Bell Mobility long-distance rates (lists Kenya as country code 254).

When WhatsApp is not enough

A WhatsApp voice or video call uses the internet. It costs nothing extra when both people have the app and Wi-Fi or a data bundle. It does not dial +254. A phone with no app, or no data this week, needs an ordinary call. That is the next section.

3. Calling a +254 phone that has no internet

You need an ordinary call when the person, or the office, has no WhatsApp or no data:

  • A parent or grandparent upcountry (shags), including on a basic phone, a mulika mwizi: a torch, a SIM, and no apps.
  • A smartphone with no bundle this week, or when power or internet is down on their side and only the mobile network is up.
  • A landline. A Nairobi landline starts 020 (section 2). KRA publishes a Nairobi landline, +254 20 4 999 999, as well as a mobile; our tax guide lists both. eCitizen support, on our eCitizen guide, is a Kenyan mobile the High Commission lists. Call it as an ordinary +254 call.

From Thunder Bay there are three ways to place that call. None is free, and this is not a ranking.

App credit or PINless number

How: put money on an account, then call from the app or dial a Canadian access number.

Good for: regular calls. You see the rate for that Kenyan network before you dial, and you can top up.

Watch: your own carrier may charge for the access call. Details

Prepaid calling card

How: buy a scratch or PIN card, dial the number on it, enter the PIN.

Good for: people who would rather pay cash at a shop.

Watch: fees, rounding and expiry can eat a small card. The five traps

Your plan's add-on

How: add an international pack to your Canadian mobile plan, and dial +254 as normal.

Good for: calling often, if Kenya is in the pack.

Watch: with no add-on, Bell's standard rate to Kenya is $2.50 a minute. Details

Before you pay, read the price for the exact number you are calling. A Safaricom mobile, an Airtel mobile and a landline are often different prices on the same page. We don't copy those cents here, because they change. Wakenyatbay is a volunteer group: no company named here pays us, and naming one is not a recommendation.

4. Apps and PINless access numbers

  • You put money on an account. You call from the app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, or dial a Canadian access number and the service connects the Kenya leg.
  • The person in Kenya needs only their ordinary phone: no app, no smartphone, no data bundle.
  • PINless means you call from the phone number you registered, with no PIN to scratch off a card.
The access number is a normal Canadian call on your own plan. Rebtel says your operator charges that call, so it suits a plan with unlimited local minutes. Koodo says province-wide plans cover numbers in your home province; a number outside it is Canadian long distance ($0.25 a minute on the plans that page describes) unless you have a Canada-wide add-on. A Montreal access number (area code 438) is outside Ontario. A toll-free 1-800 or 1-866 number is free on your phone bill, but the calling service can add its own surcharge (trap 4).

These companies' own pages, checked October 27, 2026, say they can call a Kenyan mobile or landline. Alphabetical, and not a complete list.

ServiceHow you callWhat its page says
BOSS Revolution App, or Montreal access number 438-793-4384 (English), then 011 254 and the number Separate prices for Safaricom, Airtel, other mobiles and Nairobi. Spanish and French access numbers listed.
KeepCalling App, or the access number for where you are (PIN or PINless) Digital credit, nothing mailed. 1-minute rounding, no separate hidden charge. Safaricom, other mobiles and landlines priced separately. Check the currency.
Raza App, or an access number assigned to your registered phone The page is written for US callers. Check the Canadian access number after you sign up.
Rebtel App over data, or local phone lines (Canada is on its list) Kenya landlines and mobiles priced separately, in US dollars. You can hide or show your number. Its Critical Information Summary (marked "valid as of August 2016", written for Australia) bills in 1-minute steps, charges no connection fee, and expires credit a year after the last top-up. Confirm in the app.
Talk360 App over Wi-Fi or mobile data The person in Kenya needs no app. "Your own Caller ID". The rate table we opened was priced from the US, so set the country to Canada.
Viber Out App; you need internet, they don't Reaches a Kenyan landline or mobile from Canada.
Yolla App over Wi-Fi or mobile data, no access number No connection fee. Can show your number once verified. Names Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom. Web price in US dollars; use the in-app Canadian price.
Don't take a "better rate" from a stranger on WhatsApp. Sending money is a different problem: Sending money to Kenya.

5. Prepaid calling cards, and five traps

  • Phone cards are sold at corner stores, markets and small shops, often for $5, $10 or $20, and are sometimes marketed specifically to newcomers.
  • Settlement.Org says you dial the toll-free number on the card and enter the PIN; you generally can't reload it.
  • Settlement.Org also says this business is unregulated in Canada.
  • In December 2007, the Competition Bureau said it had complaints of fewer minutes than advertised, hidden fees, and higher rates than advertised, and asked sellers to print the real per-minute rate. Treat "one cent a minute" as a claim to check, not a price.

Read these five lines on the card, or the seller's page, before you pay:

  1. Maintenance fees. A weekly fee, or another service fee, comes off the balance even when you don't call. Example: CallingCards.com prints this on each plan: one Kenya plan says "no weekly fee", and others charge a fee every week.
  2. Connection fees. A charge each time the call connects, on top of the per-minute price. Settlement.Org says to look for one.
  3. Minute rounding. On 3-minute rounding, a one-minute call is billed as three, which can use a large share of a $5 card. Example: CallingCards.com labels plans 1-minute or 3-minute rounding.
  4. Toll-free surcharge. Your phone company doesn't bill 1-800 or 1-866 calls; the card company can. It depends on which access number you dial.
    • CiCi lists a Thunder Bay access number, 807-473-1674 (a local call on most plans), and a rest-of-Canada toll-free number, 1-866-312-5247, with no extra charge.
    • CiCi adds 3 cents a minute on its continental US toll-free number and 14 cents on its northern one, and says shop cards may not match its online list.
    • NobelCom's US page says to use a local access number instead of the 800 number when you can.
  5. Expiry. An unused balance can vanish, so a card in a drawer is a poor way to keep money for an emergency call. Example: CiCi's $5 to $50 cards expire 180 days after first use; CallingCards.com labels some plans "180 days since last use" and others "valid until closed".
Card or app? On the day you call, compare the app's price for that Safaricom, Airtel or landline number with the card's price after the five lines above, and buy whichever is actually cheaper for that call. CiCi says its card has no connection, service or maintenance fee, but its own terms on the same page add up to $1.50 for a call from a pay phone. Check any card against the five lines anyway: it still uses a PIN and still expires.

Sources, checked October 27, 2026: Settlement.Org, prepaid long-distance phone cards (updated July 12, 2023: where cards are sold, the PIN, no reload, connection fees, weekly fees, minimum minutes, expiry, unregulated); Competition Bureau, prepaid calling-card disclosure (December 6, 2007: hidden fees, fewer minutes than advertised, higher mobile rates); CiCi calling card (Canadian dollars, Thunder Bay access number, toll-free surcharge on some numbers, 180-day expiry, the seller's no-fee claim and its $1.50 pay-phone charge; the page names North America Phone Cards Inc as an authorized agent of Group of Gold Line); CallingCards.com, Kenya (weekly fee, 1-minute and 3-minute rounding, expiry labels); NobelCom, Kenya cards from the United States (use a local access number instead of the 800 number).

6. Your Canadian plan's international add-on

Dialling +254 with no add-on is easy to do by mistake. On October 27, 2026, Bell Mobility listed Kenya at $2.50 a minute on its standard long-distance rates. Bell says frequent callers may save with a long-distance feature; that price is in your Bell account.

Each carrier has its own rate and add-on, so this page doesn't guess one. An add-on helps only when Kenya is included and the cost per minute, after the monthly fee, beats the app rate you checked. A bundle that doesn't list Kenya doesn't cover this call.

  • Rogers: search Kenya on its long-distance charges page.
  • Telus: on October 27, 2026, none of its monthly minute bundles listed Kenya, so Kenya calls go at the pay-per-use or International Long Distance Saver rate.
  • Koodo: pay-per-use rates by country and a Long Distance Saver. Kenya is in the country list; open the rate.
  • Freedom Mobile: World Saver add-ons. A "from" price is a starting price, not Kenya's.
  • Lucky Mobile: the plan page advertises international texts. A text isn't a call; confirm voice calling to Kenya in your account.
  • Fido, Virgin Plus, Public Mobile and Chatr publish their own figure in the app or on their site. Look up Kenya before you dial.

Sources, checked October 27, 2026: Bell Mobility, long-distance rates (Kenya, $2.50 a minute on the standard rate); Rogers, long-distance charges; Telus, long-distance add-ons; Koodo, long-distance calling; Freedom Mobile, international calling; Lucky Mobile plans. Rates change without notice. This is not a quote for your plan.

7. The number they see, and the one-ring scam

Show your own number. Rebtel, Yolla and Talk360 let you show your Canadian mobile number. Turn that on, and agree a time with family from the table in section 1. If a call claiming to be you comes from a number they don't know and asks for money or M-Pesa, they should hang up and call you back on the number they already have. See our scams guide.
  • The number that rings in Kenya is whatever caller ID the service sends: your own number, a hidden number, or another number.
  • Rebtel's app can hide or show your number. Yolla says it can show the number you verified. Talk360's Kenya page says "Your own Caller ID".
  • If a call you place from Canada shows up in Kenya as a Kenyan number, the service is not showing your own number. Choose a service that shows your own Canadian number.
  • The Communications Authority of Kenya's internet-telephony guidelines, published on its site in 2026, say Kenyan numbers are for use in Kenya, that a call from a provider outside Kenya counts as an international call, and that a VoIP call must show a valid caller ID.
  • Kenyan networks are told to block calls with no caller ID and to flag ones that look invalid or manipulated.
Wangiri ("one ring and cut"). The Authority warns about missed calls from unknown international numbers: calling back connects to a premium number that drains airtime. Your family should answer when they expect you, and never call a strange number back. If they miss you, you call again. They can report the number to Safaricom or Airtel, which can block it.

Sources, checked October 27, 2026: Rebtel, hide or show your number; Yolla (display your verified number); Talk360 ("Your own Caller ID"); Communications Authority of Kenya, internet telephony guidelines, 2026 (sections 6.5, 6.6, 7.3 and 9); Communications Authority of Kenya, Wangiri warning (June 23, 2023: do not call back an international number you do not recognize).

8. Keeping your Kenyan number active

The Safaricom or Airtel number you left with still matters:

  • M-Pesa sits on the Safaricom line.
  • KRA has required taxpayers to confirm the mobile number on iTax with a code sent to that phone.
  • Kenyan banks text one-time codes to the number on the account.
  • eCitizen accounts are opened against a mobile number. Our eCitizen guide says what we've confirmed, including whether a Canadian number works for the codes.

If the line is off, out of airtime, or recycled, those codes don't reach you, and you can be locked out of money and paperwork. Kenyan paperwork from here is on consular help.

Sources: Safaricom conditions of use (M-Pesa is one of the services on the line); KRA, iTax mobile-number verification.

Don't let Safaricom recycle the number

  • Safaricom may suspend or disconnect a line unused for more than 120 days after your last top-up's validity ends.
  • "Use" includes a chargeable call or text, data, a top-up, or M-Pesa.
  • A line sitting in a drawer with no top-up can be given to someone else.

Daima, if you are on Safaricom prepaid

  • Keeps an individual prepaid line active: KSh 200 for 6 months, KSh 500 for 1 year, KSh 1,000 for 2 years.
  • Dial *100*4# on that SIM, or use the MySafaricom app or Safaricom's site.
  • Someone at home can buy it for your number: *100*4# (Buy for Other), the app or the website.
  • Not for postpay, corporate lines or M-Pesa tills. Its minutes and SMS are for local use in Kenya, not international calls or roaming.

Roaming, dual SIM, and texts

  • Safaricom postpay: activate roaming before you leave with *456# (Safaricom's pages also give *200# and *444#). Forgot? Email advantage@safaricom.co.ke.
  • Prepaid lines often connect when the phone is on. Turn data roaming off unless you mean to use Kenyan data; texts and calls can still be charged as roaming.
  • Safaricom sells roaming data bundles that include Canada; prices are on its roaming site.
  • A dual-SIM phone keeps the Kenyan SIM in the second slot for SMS, data roaming off, while your Canadian SIM does the data. Keep a little airtime on it so a code can land.
  • M-Pesa STK menus while roaming are charged as roaming SMS; Safaricom says to dial *334# or use the M-Pesa app instead.

Airtel Kenya

  • Airtel says roaming covers calls and texts abroad, including destinations in America. Check its roaming page for Canada and the price of a text.
  • Prepaid: turn data roaming on in the phone settings. Postpay: activate at an Airtel shop before you leave; Airtel says a deposit is required.
  • Airtel doesn't publish, on the pages we checked, how long an unused prepaid line is kept. Use it or top it up, and ask Airtel.

eSIM means a shop in Kenya

  • Airtel sets up an eSIM in an Airtel shop, with your original ID. Its page doesn't say whether you keep the number or can roam, so ask.
  • You can't collect that eSIM from Thunder Bay. We haven't confirmed a Safaricom eSIM step that works from Canada.
  • The dual-SIM phone is the method that works from here.

A top-up counts as use on Safaricom. Someone at home can recharge the line, or you can buy airtime through a service that says it delivers to that network; confirm delivery before you pay. Airtime is a separate product from money transfer, so read that company's own page (Sending money to Kenya covers transfers).

Quick answers

How many hours ahead is Kenya from Thunder Bay?

Kenya is on East Africa Time, UTC+3, all year, with no daylight saving. Thunder Bay is on Eastern Time. In summer (EDT, UTC−4) Kenya is 7 hours ahead, so 7:00 a.m. here is 2:00 p.m. there. In winter (EST, UTC−5), from the first Sunday in November, Kenya is 8 hours ahead, so 7:00 a.m. here is 3:00 p.m. there.

How do I dial a Kenyan mobile from Canada?

On a mobile, dial +254 and drop the leading 0. A number written 07XX XXX XXX becomes +254 7XX XXX XXX, and 01XX XXX XXX becomes +254 1XX XXX XXX. From a landline, start with 011 254 instead of the plus sign. WhatsApp calls use the internet and don't dial +254.

How do I call Kenya when the other phone has no WhatsApp?

Use an ordinary call: app or PINless calling credit, a prepaid calling card, or your Canadian plan's international add-on. That reaches a basic phone upcountry, a phone with no data, and a landline such as a bank, a hospital, a university switchboard or KRA. Read the price for that Safaricom, Airtel or landline number before you pay. The list on the guide is not a ranking.

What should I check before I buy a calling card?

Read the connection fee, any weekly or service fee, the minute rounding, whether the toll-free access number adds a surcharge, and the expiry date. A $5 or $10 card can run out faster than the minutes on the poster, and a scratch card generally cannot be topped up. Compare that with the rate an app shows for the same Kenyan number on the same day.

What does a Canadian plan charge to call Kenya?

With no international add-on, Bell Mobility listed Kenya at $2.50 a minute on October 27, 2026. Other carriers publish their own pay-per-use rate. An add-on helps only when Kenya is included. Koodo's province-wide plans cover numbers in your home province only; an access number in another province, such as Montreal's 438, is long distance unless you have a Canada-wide plan. Lucky Mobile's advertised international texts are not minutes of calling.

Why might my family in Kenya not pick up?

They may not recognize the number. Some apps hide your number unless you turn on your own caller ID. Turn it on, and agree a time first. They should not call back an international number they do not recognize, and they should never send money because of a call from a number they don't know.

How do I keep my Safaricom line from being disconnected in Canada?

Safaricom may disconnect a prepaid line that goes unused for more than 120 days after the last top-up's validity ends. A top-up, a chargeable call or text, data, or M-Pesa counts as use. Daima, for individual prepaid lines, keeps the line for 6 months (KSh 200), 1 year (KSh 500) or 2 years (KSh 1,000). Put the SIM in a dual-SIM phone if you need texts here.
